A video uploaded to YouTube on Sunday claims to show the first stages of construction on Tesla's factory in Shanghai, China.
The video, which appears to be shot from a drone, shows what the description says is the lot Tesla will use for the factory, which is surrounded by a fence. The video also shows construction workers and equipment, as well as a small structure that is visible near the center of the frame from 1:41 to 1:45.
It's unclear if the structure is part of the factory or is meant just for the factory's construction phase, though the video's description section says it's "a simple work shed," according to Google Translate.
"The site of the Tesla (China) factory in Shanghai Lingang has been encircled by the wall and ground work is underway. At the scene, the construction workers were busy setting up a simple work shed, and the fields around the factory were also flattened. Special service personnel are also on duty in front of the construction site, and non-related personnel are not allowed to enter the factory construction site," the description says.
Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the video or confirm that it shows the future factory site.
Tesla has said that it plans to begin parts of production for its Model 3 sedan in China in 2019, and internal documents reviewed by Business Insider said Tesla planned to locate part of the production of its upcoming Model Y SUV in China. Tesla said the documents were "outdated," but did not comment specifically on the plan to build the Model Y in China. Tesla has said the Shanghai factory could produce around 500,000 vehicles starting about four to five years after construction begins.
