The Galaxy S7 has "the best performing smartphone display" according to DisplayMate, a website dedicated to display technology.
According to Dr. Raymond M. Soneira, president of DisplayMate Technologies, the Galaxy S7 "matches or breaks new records" for color accuracy, brightness, contrast ratio, viewing angles, ambient light detection, and resolution.
Soneira said the Galaxy S7's screen equals the Note 5's display, which won the same accolade last year in 2015. He goes on to say that the sheer brightness of the S7 is more impressive than the Note 5's brightness, especially considering the S7 has a smaller screen than the Note 5.
Samsung has been using AMOLED screen technology for the last few generations of Galaxy smartphones. AMOLED screens can reproduce perfect black levels because parts of the screen that show the color black actually turn off entirely. That makes brights on the screen pop out, which makes for a more dynamic picture than Samsung's main smartphone competitor, Apple's iPhone, which uses LCD display technology.
Indeed, a picture of the color black looks more gray on the iPhone's LCD display than it does on the Galaxy Note 5:

The S7's AMOLED screen is also able to recreate the most accurate colors, which Soneira remarks is rare for consumer displays, and is "very useful for high-end digital photography and other advanced imaging applications."
With its biggest competitor making strides in display technology, it's about time Apple catches up. Rumors are circulating that Apple might be using OLED displays for its iPhones soon though.
