Met Gala 2025 highlights: Diana Ross' iconic arrival, stars' red carpet looks, Rihanna's announcement, and more

Rihanna always knows how to shut down the Met Gala red carpet, and Monday night was no different.

The singer and Fenty Beauty mogul was the last to arrive, hours after her photographer dropped the news that she was pregnant with a quick Instagram photo.

Rihanna stunned in a gray and black pinstripe Marc Jacobs suit dress that hugged her baby bump. She paired the ensemble with a polka-dot tie, a dramatic black hat, and a cropped suit jacket.

Nicki Minaj wore a sleek Thom Browne suit dress as she made her entrance to the Met Gala on Monday night.

Minaj arrived fashionably late, but her arrival at the party was delayed even more as she struggled to walk up the Met Gala steps in her platform stilettos.

The moment, which was shared on Instagram, showed Minaj getting some assistance. One man held her purse, and another held her train as she carefully took each step.

Few can pull off a suit like Janelle Monáe, and the star did not disappoint on Monday night.

Described as the "modern day dandy" by Thom Browne, who designed the suit, Monáe also enlisted the help of "Wicked" costume designer Paul Tazewell to help create the illusion-bending ensemble.

The ensemble featured a trompe l'oeil cape, which Monáe removed on the red carpet to reveal a perfectly-tailored suit — one side red, the other side black.

"You almost go from the traditional male to the red exuberant female, all on the same figure," Tazewell told The New York Times.

And it held a symbolic message for Monáe, who told the outlet she wanted to play the character of a "time-traveling dandy."

"I want to deconstruct respectability politics around suiting and around how Black people can show up in the world," she added. "I wanted to show that we get to decide who we are."

Some members of the Kardashian-Jenner family made sure to arrive fashionably late for the biggest night in fashion.

Kendall Jenner was the first of the family to arrive, and Kim Kardashian and Kylie Jenner both walked the Met Gala steps after the Vogue red carpet coverage had ended.

Kendall Jenner opted for a simple gray Torishéju suit jacket and skirt in a look that felt very corporate, while her older sister, Kim Kardashian, arrived in an off-the-shoulder black leather dress complete with a fedora hat.

Meanwhile, Kylie Jenner sported a gray tweed halter dress with a sheer black corset bodice, seeming to draw inspiration from both of her sisters' ensembles. She showed up without boyfriend Timothée Chalamet, dashing hopes of those who thought the A-list couple would finally make their red-carpet debut.

No pants? No problem!

Sabrina Carpenter showed off her pins in a burgundy bodysuit with matching sky-high pumps as she walked up the Met Gala steps on Monday night.

Carpenter told Vogue during the magazine's livestream that the Louis Vuitton ensemble was designed by Pharrell Williams, who was also a co-chair of the night.

The "Short N' Sweet" songstress said Williams advised her to skip the pants due to her height.

Rihanna stole the Met Gala spotlight before she even arrived on Monday night.

In a photo taken by her photographer, Miles Diggs, the singer revealed that she and ASAP Rocky are expecting baby number three.

Diggs shared an Instagram picture of Rihanna showing off her baby bump as she walked through the streets of New York City in the rain.

Rihanna and ASAP Rocky are also the proud parents of two sons: 3-year-old RZA and 21-month-old Riot.

The singer notably announced her second pregnancy while performing at the Super Bowl halftime show in 2023.

ASAP Rocky had fun taking pictures on the blue carpet in a custom black suit and wool parka jacket that he designed.

According to Vogue, the rapper's design paid homage to the Marmot jackets that were popular when he was growing up in New York City's Harlem neighborhood.

"Marmots are a Harlem tradition; in the winter, everyone has a Marmot on," he told the outlet. "That was our teenage jacket."

The daffodil carpet came to a halt as Diana Ross slowly made her way up the Met Gala steps.

All eyes were on the American icon as she sported a white dress with a very dramatic matching cape that shimmered in silver sparkles.

Seven people helped carry the cape after Ross, who also wore a dramatic hat covered in white feathers, posed for pictures. At the top of the stars, Ross told Vogue that her train was embroidered with the names of her children and grandchildren.

In a night full of tailored black suits, Ross's bold ensemble felt akin to Rihanna's iconic yellow cape dress at the 2015 Met Gala.

Everyone knew Colman Domingo was going to bring it to the Met Gala, and the Oscar-nominated actor lived up to the hype on Monday night.

Domingo first arrived on the Met Gala steps in a positively regal blue Valentino cape with a shimmering gold breastplate — an outfit that would've made the late style icon and OG dandy André Leon Talley extremely proud.

But that wasn't all Domingo had up his sleeve. The "Sing Sing" star revealed there was a perfectly tailored suit underneath, complete with a polka-dot tie and a flower.

Anna Wintour arrived for fashion's biggest night in head-to-toe pastels.

She sported a baby-blue silk shift dress embroidered with flowers, which coordinated well with the blue carpet covered in daffodils.

Wintour paired her ensemble with a matching blue floor-length coat and a brooch that sparkled from its lapel. She styled her signature bob to perfection, although her usual pair of sunglasses were MIA.

Taylor, one of the hosts of Vogue's livestream for the evening, arrived at the gala with the costume designer Ruth E. Carter.

Her ensemble featured all the hallmarks of dandyism, from a pinstripe suit to a cane and statement hat, and additions like platform shoes and floral brooches that felt uniquely her.

Taylor's whole look was a standout, but her statement cape was the star of the outfit. It trailed behind her dramatically and was embroidered with "Harlem Rose," referencing her 2018 song "Rose in Harlem."

James announced on X on Monday that he would be unable to attend because of a knee injury.

"Hate to miss an historical event," he wrote, adding that his wife, Savannah James, will still be attending. "My beautiful powerful Queen will be there holding the castle down as she always has done!"

It would have been the basketball star's first Met Gala appearance.

Rihanna's outfits for the 10 Met Galas she has attended to date have become legendary over the years.

She reached icon status at the 2015 Met Gala with the yellow Guo Pei gown she wore. Rihanna also stole the show when she co-chaired the gala in 2018, wearing a Margiela ensemble inspired by the pope.

Rihanna skipped the 2024 gala, but we're hopeful she'll be back this year since her partner, ASAP Rocky, is a co-chair. Her outfit will surely make a splash if she walks the Met Gala red carpet again.

This year's co-hosts and committee members are all especially stylish.

We can expect Doechii to have a standout moment, Colman Domingo could easily be the night's best-dressed star, and Tyla might turn heads for the second year in a row.

We're also keeping an eye out for Ayo Edebiri, who looked effortlessly chic in a powder-blue Chanel skirt suit in Vogue's "'Superfine' and Dandy: Iconic Creatives" spread ahead of the gala.

While the rest of the guest list is under wraps, we're hopeful stars like Zendaya, Greta Lee, Elle Fanning, and Jennifer Lopez will return to the Met, as they wore some of the most eye-catching looks at the 2024 Met Gala.

It's also common for celebrity couples to make red-carpet debuts at the Met Gala, so we'll be looking out for A-listers walking hand in hand up the steps.

Vogue's editor in chief first chaired the Met Gala in 1995, and in the 30 years she's been spearheading it, Wintour has become synonymous with the event itself.

She decides who earns a coveted spot on the Met Gala's guest list. The list of celebrities who have never attended a Met Gala has some surprising names.

It was also rumored that she approved the outfits of everyone who attended, though she shut that down in an interview with "Good Morning America" ahead of the 2025 event.

"Many call and ask our advice, so we try and help some of them as best we can," she told Michael Strahan. "Some, no idea."

The 2025 Met Gala co-chairs — Lewis Hamilton, Colman Domingo, Pharrell Williams, and ASAP Rocky — are all known for their bold approaches to menswear.

Wintour has never made the co-chairs' exact responsibilities public, but they're said to help plan the event's dress code and dinner. They also promote the event, and alongside the Met Gala's committee members, they are usually the first people to arrive on the event's red carpet.

The 2025 Met Gala committee is full of A-list stars, including Tyla, Ayo Edebiri, and Simone Biles.

This year's Met Gala is themed "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style."

Vogue reported that the theme was inspired by Black dandyism, menswear, and "the importance of clothing and style to the formation of Black identities in the Atlantic diaspora."

Black dandyism, specifically, is a style and movement that's been embraced by Black men since the 18th century. It typically involves sharp dressing — think tailored suits, hats, and canes — to assert individuality, culture, and equality.

Met Gala guests have been given a loose dress code titled "Tailored For You," though it's open to interpretation. Still, Vogue said we can expect to see a surplus of suits, canes, pocket squares, and other pieces related to dandyism.

This year will also mark the second time the Costume Institute exhibit is focused on menswear. The museum previously hosted the "Bravehearts: Men in Skirts" display between November 2003 and February 2004.
