Janelle Monáe appeared to come out as being non-binary in a tweet on Friday.

Monáe, who stars in the upcoming film "Antebellum," shared a post on Twitter that read: "There is absolutely nothing better than living outside the gender binary."

The star's quote tweet included the hashtag "#IAmNonbinary."

Monáe did not elaborate beyond the initial quote tweet, but several fans of the actress and musician responded with supportive messages.

Someone who identifies as non-binary expresses their gender identity as falling outside the categories of "male" or "female." They may define their gender as being somewhere between "male" or "female" or may identify differently, according to GLAAD.

In a 2018 interview with Rolling Stone, Monáe came out as identifying as pansexual, which means "being attracted to all gender identities, or attracted to people regardless of gender," according to GLAAD.

Monáe said in the interview that she previously identified as bisexual, "but then later I read about pansexuality and was like, 'Oh, these are things that I identify with too.' I'm open to learning more about who I am."
