One of the biggest new features in Apple's next mobile operating system, iOS 6, is the new Maps app.

The biggest change: Apple no longer uses Google Maps data to power the app. Instead, Apple uses maps from TomTom along with some cool 3D mapping technology it bought several months ago.
We got some hands-on time with the new iOS Maps app, so check out our tour below.
Here's the new Maps icon. Tap to launch the app.

When you launch Maps, the app zooms in to your current location.

Tap the triangle icon in the bottom right to activate your phone's compass. The map will reposition itself to face the direction your phone is.

Some nearby venues will automatically pop up. Tap one to see details. If you want even more information, tap the blue arrow.

Maps gets all its venue information from Yelp. Here you'll find contact information, the address, and website.

You can also read reviews from Yelp users.

Looking for something? Just type it into the search bar. Let's see if there are any good ice cream places around.

The Yelp reviews and photos look good, but how do we get there? Tap the car icon next to the venue for directions.

The app will automatically plot your route. Tap "Start" for turn-by-turn directions.

Your turn-by-turn directions will show up at the top of your screen.

You can rotate maps with a simple multitouch gesture. Place two fingers on the screen and twist to rotate the map. Tap the compass icon in the top right corner to return to the original orientation.

If you tap the bottom right corner of the screen, you get a few more options. (The traffic feature doesn't work yet.) There are also a few viewing options for the map. Let's check them out.

"Hybrid" gives you a satellite view plus street and landmark names. Satellite view will take all the text away and give you a clean satellite image.

The bookmarks button will show you recent locations, locations you've saved, and addresses for contacts in your phone's address book.

"Flyover" is a new feature in Maps that shows you spectacular 3D maps. The feature wasn't working in the app when we tried it
