How to use Google Hangouts on your iPhone to start calls and messages, including group conversations

Google Hangouts is a chat app that's a part of Google's G Suite, but available for download on both Android and iPhone

You can use Google Hangouts to exchange messages in conversations with as many as 150 people at once, or conduct a video call with up to 10 people at a time. To get started, be sure to install the Google Hangouts app from the App Store and log in with your Google account.

How to use Google Hangouts on your iPhone

1. Start the Google Hangouts app. 

2. Tap the Contacts icon at the bottom left of the screen.

3. Tap someone in your contact list whom you want to chat with. If the person isn't in your contacts, enter their email address in the search box at the top of the screen and tap "Done." Then tap their email address.

4. In the pop-up window, choose how you want to communicate — with a text message, video call, or voice call.

5. Once you are chatting with the contact, you can add additional people. 

6. Tap the three dots at the top right of the screen and then in the pop-up, tap "Create new group."

7. Add additional people to the group from your contacts list and then tap the checkmark at the top right of the screen.

How to use Google Hangouts on your iPhone to quickly create a group chat

You can also use the Start Hangout button — which is the green button with the plus sign inside it — to create a group conversation quickly. 

1. Start the Google Hangouts app. 

2. Tap the Text button at the bottom of the screen. 

3. Tap the Start Hangout button.

4. If you want to chat with one person, tap that contact in the contacts list. Or, tap "New group" and add multiple people to your chat. 

5. Once you are in a chat, you can tap the Video or Voice buttons at the top of the screen to change to that kind of conversation.
