How to go live on TikTok, or join someone else's TikTok live

Read in app

Going live on TikTok can help you boost your engagement, as well as build your audience. You can even earn money in the process through gift points.

But going live isn't a tool that's available to all creators — you'll have to meet certain requirements to access the option on the app.

Here's how to go live on the platform, including tips for creating a successful livestream.

Who can go live on TikTok?

TikTok requires you to be at least 16 years old and have 1,000 or more followers to go live on the platform.

Creators who are at least 18 can also earn gift points in the process, while younger ones cannot.

You should also be aware that you can't actively solicit gifts or offer incentives for providing gifts while you're live. Otherwise you'll violate TikTok's community guidelines.

How to go live on TikTok

1. Open your TikTok app and log in to your account, if necessary.

2. Tap the plus + sign, located at the bottom-center of the screen.

4. Enter the title of your livestream and then select Go Live to start.

How to join someone else's TikTok Live

Joining someone else's TikTok Live also requires that you have at least 1,000 followers.

Find the Live that you wish to join and, in the comments section, tap the button that looks like two figures side-by-side. This will send a request to join the broadcast.

Tips for going live on TikTok

Follow these tips to create engaging live content on TikTok:

  • Set up your space. Make sure you have a stable filming surface with good lighting. For example, a ring light will make your livestream look more professional.
  • Ensure quality audio. Make sure there's minimal background noise, if at all, so that your audience isn't distracted.
  • Time it right. Try to time your livestream based on when your audience is most likely to be on the app. This will help maximize your view count.
  • Watch the length. TikTok advises that you aim for a 30-minute time slot.
  • Plan ahead. Prepare what you'll do during the livestream to avoid long stretches of dead air.
  • Expand your reach. Post a TikTok just before going live to maximize your chances of getting new viewers.
  • Check your WiFi. Double-check that you have a strong internet connection beforehand.
  • Interact with your audience. Read and respond to the comments as best you can.
  • Get help from a friend. Use moderators, if possible, to screen out and block trolls.
