Thousands of fashion lovers showed up to the final day of the "Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty" exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art Sunday, some standing in line over three hours to catch a glimpse of the buzzed-about show.
Lines snaked from Central Park through the various museum galleries late into the night, and at around 10pm the 658,000th visitor entered the exhibition since it opened May 4, ArtInfo reported. Even Vogue editor Anna Wintour made an appearance.
The exhibition was the eighth most visited show ever put on by the Met, and the most popular special exhibition ever put on by the Costume Institute, according to The New York Times.
The McQueen show, which was extended to accommodate the crowds, beat Jeff Koons’ 2008 sculpture show on the museum’s roof, which attracted 657,801 visitors.
The most popular Met exhibition ever was the “Treasures of Tutankhamun” show from 1978-9 that drew 1.36 million people, ArtInfo said.
